This service provides a number of benefits but tire wear on your tires is the biggest, so if your vehicle is out of alignment, the tires will wear excessively, greatly reducing tire life. Did you know that the average tire usually lasts up to 40,000 miles if the alignment is correct but without proper alignment wear and tear can reduce a tires life driving as little as 5000 miles out of alignment?
Another important note in addition to extending tire life and driver comfort, is alleviating driver fatigue - having to "hold" the steering wheel to keep the car from drifting off the road can greatly increase fatigue, especially noticed when driving on the highway.
Alignments should be performed annually, when you buy new tires or if you hit a curb or a serious pothole. The easiest way for the driver to tell if the vehicle needs an alignment is three fold: 1) First ask yourself, is the steering wheel straight when driving straight?, 2) Drive on the highway at appropriate speed and gently let go of the steering wheel. Does the vehicle go straight and stay in the lane? If it strays, you need an alignment. (Be sure you are on a flat road. A crowned road will cause the vehicle to drift down the crown), and 3) look at your tires, if they are wearing unevenly, you may need an alignment too.
Our alignment service takes into consideration the proper alignment of the wheels and the steering wheel. In addition Downing Street Garage has the proper equipment to reset the traction control system found on more and more vehicles. For this system to operate correctly it has to be reset when the wheels are aligned. Not every repair shop is equipped to reset this important system, but it is a routine procedure when we perform an alignment.
